Socratic Seminar! (Wait for it--videos WILL load!)
BY JULIAN BRUNO, THE TUSKER TRIBUNE
Recently, most 7th grade classes have been participating in something called a “Socratic Seminar”. Half of the class goes into the center of the room, sitting in a circular arrangement of desks. The rest sit around the circle. The students in the inner circle talk about a piece of text such as “Twelve Angry Men”, a screenplay by Reginald Rose. It is about jurors deciding if a boy should be put to death because of murder charges, or if he is not guilty and should be let go. The students talk about certain questions and dig deep into opinions and truths. Having participating in one, I believe that it is a good way to learn and see how others’ opinions differ from our own.
