World Language Poetry Contest

14 world language Somers High School students participated in William Paterson University’s 37th Annual World Language Poetry Recitation Contest with Signora Scerbo as their advisor and coach, and the incomparable Mr. Edier Rivera as chaperone.

Over 55 schools were represented from the tri-state area at this prestigious event. French, German, Italian, Korean and Spanish students were selected from each level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Native) to memorize and recite a poem, written by renowned international poets, in their respective target language. These youngsters have spent many hours being coached, overcoming inhibitions and trying to capture the essence of their poem.

Student contestants were judged on Delivery, Pronunciation, Intonation & Poise as criteria, by poets, linguists and world language professors.
