Somers High School Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Commended Students

8 of 9 Commended Students in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship ProgramNine Somers High School seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. The Commended Students are Chloe Berichi, Hartin F. Brunco, Emily Dodd, Jesse M. Heller, Ray Mandel-Mueller, Robert W. Moore, Gianna M. Rotunno, Hudson Schantz, and Jaewon Yeo.

These talented students join the approximately 34,000 students nationwide who have been recognized this month for their outstanding academic achievement on the PSAT/NMSQT exams last year. More than 1.5 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which serves as an initial screen of program entrants.

“We are very proud at Somers to have seniors all recognized as Commended Students in this year’s competition,” said Somers High School Principal Mark Bayer. “Each of these students has distinguished himself/herself through their hard work and dedication to their studies while students at SHS and are deserving of this recognition.  To be among only 34,000 students of the nearly 1.5 million who take the PSAT nationwide is a distinguishing honor of which these outstanding students should be proud.”

Although Commended students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. They received Letters of Commendation for their outstanding academic promise.
