With Record-Breaking Weight Throw, Charles Sullivan Becomes State Champion, Earning a First for Somers High School

Somers High School track and field athlete Charles Sullivan became the district’s first weight throw state champion on Saturday when he flung the 25-pound weight 73 feet, 9.25 inches – and into the record books.

His distance was a record for Section 1 and Westchester County and elevates him to number seven in New York State history.

“I knew the second that it left my hand it would break the records,” Sullivan said. “While I didn't know exactly how far it went, I knew it was incredibly far, and I walked out celebrating.”

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships took place at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island. Sullivan’s throw in the event reached seven inches farther than the previous record set a month ago, which in turn broke a record that Sullivan had set earlier.

“It’s a great feeling winning the state championship,” Sullivan said. “It had been a goal of mine for a while. Being the first in the school’s history was just another great honor. Somers track and field has an incredible history and has had many legendary coaches and athletes come through the program.”

Mike Lacko, head coach of the boys track and field team, said Sullivan’s victory “is a testament to his unwavering dedication and exceptional talent. Making history, Charlie is the first athlete in Somers Track and Field history to win the overall State Championship in his event, solidifying his place as a true legend. I am incredibly proud of him.”
