Somers High School (SHS) announced that Natalia Tellez has been named valedictorian and Sara Hanford has been named salutatorian of the Class of 2025.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Natalia and Sara for their exceptional dedication and for achieving this esteemed recognition,” said Peter Rodrigues, SHS Principal.

Natalia and Sara found out that they had received this recognition when they were called down to the office and were warmly welcomed by a group of administrators.

“I had no idea until I saw my close friend Sara walk into the office too,” said Natalia. “They then told us, and we hugged, laughed, and smiled. We were really proud of each other. I was truly and wholeheartedly honored.”

“I did not expect to be chosen,” said Sara. “It came as a complete surprise!”

Natalia called her parents right away to share the exciting news. Her next call was to her two older brothers. “All of my family has told me that they are incredibly proud and happy, and some were even a little speechless.” Natalia and her family celebrated the news with dinner at their favorite restaurant and surprised her with a cake.

“I texted my parents and sister almost immediately to let them know,” said Sara. “Both my family and friends were very proud of me, and I got lots of congratulations.”

Natalia and Sara’s friendship started in third grade when they both played defense on the same sports team. Their friendship deepened when they were both in the same classroom in fifth grade. Since then, they’ve had many classes together and have been friends inside and outside of school. On the weekend, Sara and Natalia celebrated together at a local restaurant, reminiscing about their memories together over the years.

“The Somers school community has helped me achieve this accomplishment by introducing me to genuinely amazing teachers who care about you beyond who you are as a student,” Natalia said.

Sara added, “I have received overwhelming guidance and support from my teachers over the years. They’ve always been very generous with their time and have created a positive learning environment that has helped me succeed.”

After high school, Natalia plans to go to college and study either political science, law and government, or international relations. Sara plans to continue her education in college, focusing on a healthcare career.
