Student Council Serves Seniors

Local senior citizens from the Somers community came together for the annual Senior Luncheon at Somers High School.

High school student council members planned the event for over a month. They organized the logistics and volunteers needed to make the day happen, helped to plan what food would be served, and sent out invitations by mail to local seniors. Those in need of community service hours were able to apply this event to go toward their goal.

Students from all grades were invited to volunteer before, during, or after the event. Before the event, students were hands-on helpers, doing everything from setting up tables and chairs, prepping the coffee and tea, and organizing food.

During the luncheon, students served food, which was catered by Somers Super Deli. The meal included Chicken Francese, rice pilaf, and vegetables. Students were also encouraged to visit with seniors while they dined. After the event, work continued as students cleaned up and put the cafeteria back together for the following school day.

“I enjoyed talking to the seniors and helping out in any way I could,” said sophomore class vice president Scotty Evans.

The cast and crew members of the high school production of Mean Girls also stopped by during the luncheon to lend a hand and visit with seniors. After lunch, interested seniors were escorted to the auditorium to attend the matinee performance.

This continued tradition helps to nurture the bonds between generations, fosters a greater sense of connection, and builds empathy for others within the Somers community. It helps students learn more about themselves and ways they can contribute to their community, both inside and outside of school.

“The event brightens the seniors' day, allowing them to connect with students, share their stories, and reminisce,” said Scotty. “For students, it’s a valuable experience to listen to the seniors’ stories, learn from them, and form meaningful connections.”
