Student Broadcasters Find Camaraderie While Calling the Shots

“Touchdown!”

“He shoots, he scores!”

Benny Silk, founder and president of the Somers Sports Broadcasting Club, can be heard calling out phrases like these and more from the booth during local varsity games.

The Somers Sports Broadcasting Club is in its second year and has hit its stride. During local games, up to three club members are in the booth, calling the game, while other members film and stream to the club’s YouTube channel. This year, the club was also able to attend the State Championship game in Syracuse, calling the play-by-play while Somers Varsity football scored its way to victory.

“The Somers Sports Broadcast Club has an Instagram and Twitter account which we use to advertise our sports talk show episodes and broadcasts,” said Benny.

Now that football is over, the club has moved on to calling the varsity basketball games. In the spring, they also plan on broadcasting baseball and lacrosse games. Each new sport has brought new opportunities for the members to hone their skills.

Along with calling games from the booth, the club members host a weekly talk show on YouTube. Each show focuses on a different topic. Topics have included Somers school sports and professional sports, making predictions for upcoming matchups, debates, trivia, and conducting interviews with coaches and athletes.

“For the talk show episodes, we meet on Wednesday to plan and discuss what we will be talking about and what the episode will include,” said Benny. “We organize it into a script. Then everyone researches the topic they are given. During our Friday meetings, we record the episode.”

The club currently has twelve members who contribute in a variety of ways, including: holding leadership positions; running cameras; working with the technology needed to film, stream, and call games; hosting interviews; and brainstorming new ideas for talk show topics. They meet on Wednesdays and Fridays during community lunch, which is when most of the planning and filming of their talk show takes place. Calling the games from the booth is ongoing throughout the week based on the game schedules.

Benny founded the Somers Broadcasting Club last year because he wanted to bring together a community of like-minded people—those who love to discuss sports. What started as a hobby has now become something he hopes to pursue more seriously in the future. He plans to study Sports Broadcasting in college next year.

“The goal is to eventually broadcast professional sports,” said Benny.
