Friendsgiving Brings Old and New Friends Together
Making new friends and spending time with old ones was on the menu at Primrose Elementary during their “Friendsgiving” celebration before the holiday break.
First graders enjoyed a snack while sitting at tables in the cafeteria with students who were not in their current class. Sitting with other students they’ve seen around the school gave everyone a chance to meet someone new.
Aviana described Friendsgiving by saying “It’s where a group of people come, and they meet each other.”
Students created brightly colored placemats to help make their tables festive. They were encouraged to get to know the new friends at their table by talking while they enjoyed their snacks together.
“You meet new people by saying hello,” said Julianne. “They tell you their name and you use your name too.”
As a group, the students played a game of “Would You Rather,” led by one of the teachers. The teacher asked a would-you-rather-style question, and then the students stood up to show their preference. Topics included their choices for pies and side dishes that were typically a part of a Thanksgiving dinner. There were also a few sillier questions that helped the students share a laugh.
Not only was this activity a lot of fun for the students, but it also allowed them to see what they had in common with their fellow first graders. Friendsgiving helped students celebrate the holiday and allowed them to spend time with old friends while meeting new ones they will see around the school, at special events and activities, on the playground, and maybe even in next year’s classroom.
