How to Become a Mentor
Mentors provide one-on-one support to young people by building relationships over time – offering their friendship and sharing their life experiences with youth in our community. Many people feel that being a mentor requires special skills, but mentors are simply people who embody the qualities of a good role model.
Mentors in the program have the ability to communicate with 8-14 year-olds openly and without judgement. They possess strong listening skills and have a sincere desire to be personally involved with the youth in our community. Effective mentors recognize that lasting relationships develop over time. They are willing to take time to get to know their mentees and to learn new things that are important to their mentees (i.e. music, friendships, sports, etc.)
Accepted mentors commit to meet with their mentees for one hour per week over the nine month school year and to attend orientation and training sessions as required. They are also able to connect with other mentors and take part in program events and outings.
Those interested in applying for a volunteer mentor position are required to fill out an application, complete a screening, and pass an FBI background check and fingerprinting. If accepted, mentors attend orientation and training sessions before being matched with an SCSD student.
