Children for whom English is not their first language are assessed using the NYSETEL to see if they qualify for English as a New Learner Services. Information about the language spoken in the home is reported on the Home Language Questionnaire which is part of our registration packet. Students who qualify for this support may receive push in or pull out support individually or in small groups to support their English Language skills and build content vocabulary. Lara Davidson is the ENL teacher for SIS. Students who are first year students in the USA do not need to take the NYS ELA exam, but they do take a translated version of the NYS Math test. All ELL students take the NYSESLAT each year to assess their mastery of the English language. Mastery on this exam is what exits a student from ENL services.
