MATH
Math is approached with the understanding that children construct meaning when given many opportunities to learn in the forms of games, explorations, and written and oral practice, along with problem solving instruction using a variety of strategies. The Everyday Math Program, which is currently in use in all of our classes, supports the district and state standards, allowing for maximum growth at each grade level. The program uses a ‘spiral’ philosophy or revisits important concepts and while mastery is expected at certain points, children are given ample opportunities to understand important mathematical ideas. Children are not only expected to solve traditional number problems but to explain their mathematical thinking using mathematical language. This ensures deep and meaningful understanding.
Somers Intermediate School (Grade 2-5)
MATHEMATICS
“Everyday Mathematics,” a research-based program developed at the University of Chicago, is the program we use at SIS for math instruction. The program is aligned to NYS Common Core Standards and maintains high expectations for all students. Concepts and skills are developed over time with increasing complexity. In addition, students are taught to use a variety of strategies to solve challenging math problems. Assessment is ongoing and the program offers many differentiation options to meet the needs of all learners.
Mrs. Olinto is the math coordinator for SIS. Mrs. Olinto can be reached at: eolinto@somersschools.org.

Somers Middle School (Grades 6-8)
Math at the middle school takes the computational and conceptual skills learned at the elementary level and begins to turn them into application. All of our classes currently use Big Ideas for math instruction, which adheres to the NYS Next Generation Math Standards. The Middle School Math Department stives to ensure that all students have their mathematical abilities both supported and challenged. We currently offer an accelerated math course in 7th grade which covers the 7th and 8th grade curriculums as well as Algebra in 8th grade. Throughout 6th and 7th grade, students are assessed to determine placement for the following year. Placement in these courses is based on ability, skill level, teacher recommendation, and the individual needs of the student.
Somers High School (Grades 9-12)
MATHEMATICS
The Somers High School Mathematics Department offers students the opportunity to build a substantial foundation in mathematics.
All courses expand upon the skills that students developed in the middle school. Students are required to earn three math credits by passing three math courses as well as pass one math Regents Exam to receive a Regents Diploma.
