• Ms. Cirieco's Welcome Letter 23-24

Dear 5th Graders! Welcome to 5th Grade!

My name is Ms. Cirieco. I am new to teaching at SIS and I am hoping you will help to show me the ropes! This will be my tenth year teaching and I am coming to you from West Patent Elementary in Bedford, NY.

While this is my first year teaching at SIS, it is not my first time walking the halls! I was (at one time) a student at SIS as well! While a lot of things have changed since I was a 5th grader, there are still a few things that are very much the same!

In our classroom, we will work together like a family. As your teacher it is my job to make sure you are safe, happy, and growing as a learner, and as a person. This year we will practice values such as kindness, responsibility, empathy, honesty and perseverance. In our classroom, we will work together to create an environment where we all feel comfortable expressing ourselves. This could mean sharing thoughts and ideas, asking questions when confused, or speaking to each other when we feel upset. I promise to always listen carefully, and try my very best to help you when you need it.

    5th Grade Preview:

This year will be filled with new learning and exciting activities.

In Reading this year we will explore many different genres. You will learn new strategies to help deepen your understanding of texts, as well as continue to use the skills learned leading up to 5th grade.

In Writing you will learn about the writing process and transform into a true author. You will publish pieces of writing in a variety of genres, and we will have many class writing celebrations.

During Read Aloud this year, you will listen to, think about, and discuss many different captivating texts. Together we will explore themes such as persevering when things are difficult, overcoming adversity, and the importance of being kind.

In Math, you will continue to develop your problem solving skills and expand your mathematical vocabulary. Together, we will explore strategies and continue to develop skills for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will also discover more about the world of fractions, geometry and decimals. Get ready to investigate all the wonders of math!

In Science, you will have the opportunity to think and act like a real scientist! We will explore, experiment, and test hypotheses within a variety of topics.

Our Social Studies units focus on early civilizations in the Western Hemisphere. We will question, research, discuss, and explain how these early cultures interacted with each other.

This is going to be a fantastic year!

    First Day of School:

Attached you will find a list of some supplies you will need for school this year. Please remember to bring your supplies with you on the first day of school. Please do not label them because we will label them together.

Please bring 3 items that tell about you. These items can represent your family, your friends, and/or the things you like to do. All items should be small enough to fit in your backpack.

Please bring a picture of yourself that we can put on our wall of learners.

Enjoy the rest of your summer! I can’t wait to see you all on the first day of school! Best,

    Ms. Cirieco
