Language and Culture
Language and Culture organizations support student interest in exploring the language and history of various cultures. Several of these organizations are supported by academic programs where language and culture are taught within a discipline. Examples of these organizations include the Spanish Club, Italian Club, and French Club.

FRENCH CLUB/HONOR SOCIETY Advisor: Anna Timone
The French Club draws together students from all levels of French who enjoy activities that promote an appreciation and understanding of French culture. The club organizes and arranges trips to French restaurants, plays, film festivals, museum exhibits, etc. Club officers and members are responsible for the Mardi Gras celebration which takes place each year in February, and which is the principal fundraiser for the club. Each June the club awards a savings bond to a graduating senior who has contributed to club activities and who has demonstrated enthusiasm and devotion to the French language and culture. The French Club meets twice a month and sponsors an activity at the annual Homecoming Fair. There are monthly film screenings where authentic French films (with English subtitles) are shown after school and French refreshments are served to French students of all levels, and any friends they wish to invite to enjoy the movie with us.
ITALIAN CLUB/HONOR SOCIETY Advisor: Melissa Golia
The purpose of the Italian Club is to promote and encourage interest in the Italian language and culture. Our talented officers prepare exciting cultural and vocabulary games such as Italian Jeopardy, for club members to enjoy. We organize many cultural outings, including the Renaissance collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Frick Art Galley, The Metropolitan Opera House, the United Nations, Little Italy at Arthur Avenue. Benvenuti al Club Italiano!
SPANISH CLUB/HONOR SOCIETY Advisor: Monica Martell
The Spanish Club affords students the opportunity to experience cross-cultural activities, such as fiestas and activities that Spanish speaking countries share. The club organizes and arranges trips to Spanish/Hispanic restaurants, plays, shows, etc. The club also awards a graduating senior who has contributed and demonstrated a great level of enthusiasm. The club is designed to go “beyond the classroom” working from cross-cultural understanding and simply enjoying the Spanish culture. The club meets twice a month from October to May.
SIGN LANGUAGE CLUB Advisor: Doreen Stoecker
This is a fun and interactive club where anyone of any skill level can join! We explore the language of American Sign Language (ASL) through fun and interactive lessons and activities. We also learn songs in sign language and may perform them (this is not a mandatory part of the club). We meet on Fridays in room 230.
