• Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! 

    Dear SIS Families,

    Welcome to the 19-20 school year!  We hope you are having a relaxing summer and are starting to think about all the possibilities a new school year holds.  We have been working hard to ensure that the building is clean, refreshed and ready for the opening of school.  While we are enjoying some of the quieter days of summer, SIS just isn’t the same without the children.  Please read all of the information below carefully in order to be ready for the opening of school. 

    First Day of School

    The first day of school for all students is Wednesday, September 4, 2019.  School begins at 9:00 a.m. and buses leave the parking lot at 3:25 pm.  Any student arriving after 9:00 a.m. is marked late.  Any student signed out before 3:15 p.m. will be marked as missing that academic time since our instructional day goes until 3:15.  Thank you for not signing out students early unless it is absolutely necessary.


    Placement Information

    Placement information will be available beginning Friday, August 16th, after 2:30p.m.  In order to access your child’s placement information, please login to the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.  Individuals new to IC will receive an email from our office staff with an activation code.  Click on the Family Portal link on the right hand side of the district homepage to sign in and access your account. 


    Once you learn your child’s class placement, please go to the SIS homepage by clicking here. Under academics, please click on classroom web pages and then find your teacher’s name. Once you click on the name, you will access the welcome letter and additional supply list. 


    Please be reminded that you will NO LONGER receive a list of students in the class. As a school district, we may no longer share names and contact information for the class for reasons of confidentiality.  Please do not ask our office staff to share the names of classmates with you.  Please see below for PTA directory sign up.



    Parent AM Drop-Off and PM Pick-Up

    We anticipate that most students will take the bus to and from school, but in case work obligations or after school activities make taking the bus difficult, we would like to review our a.m drop-off and p.m. pick-up procedures.  We also want to take this opportunity to review some basic bus guidelines. 

    AM Parent drop-off – will happen in the front of the building near the orange cones beginning at 8:30 a.m.  When you pull into the building lot, please pull up to the furthest cone and a staff member will assist you.  Parents should remain in the car and children should exit the car on the sidewalk side of the car as opposed to the traffic side for safety.  Please listen to staff directions, so we can keep the students safe.  If you require more time to drop your child off, please park your car in a designated spot and then walk your child into the front of the building.  Cars are not permitted to enter the bus circle.  Thank you for your cooperation.

    PM Parent pick-up – will happen at the back of the school near the 5th grade wing (turn right as you enter our parking lot).   If you are picking up, your child should bring a note to school.  When pulling into the traffic loop, staff members will ask to see ID and will have you sign out the student(s) you are picking up.  Thank you for your cooperation with this. Parent pick up begins at 3:15 in the car loop. Should you need to pick up a student before that time, please come to the main office before 3PM to do so. Dismissal from the office will not be permitted between 3 and 3:15 as we prepare for building dismissal. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

    Bus – Please indicate on School Dismissal Manager if your child will be taking a different bus home or if they are staying after for an activity.  We will be reviewing bus safety and basic behavioral expectations with all students at the start of the school year.  We appreciate you taking the time to remind your child to use an inside voice and keep hands, feet, and belongings out of the aisle while on the bus.   They should also wear a seat belt.   As a reminder, we have a NO ELECTRONICS policy in school (except for Kindles) and on the buses.  Electronic devices are very expensive and children and families become very upset when they get lost or broken (this happened often in the past when we tried allowing this).  Please be assured that your student does not need a cell phone while at school.  If there is a need for a child to call home in an emergency, we will allow them to use the school phones.  Thank you.




    Contact Information

    It is vital that we have up to date contact information for each child enrolled in the Somers Central School District.  Please review and update your household contact information via the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.  Please confirm that all telephone numbers (home, work and mobile) and emergency contact information is correct.  In addition, please be sure to add your child’s pediatrician and dentist as “non-household contacts.” 

    Security Procedures

    Just a reminder, upon visiting SIS (and any of the Somers schools) you will need to ring the bell at the main entrance to access the building.   Visitors are required to show a driver’s license, which will be scanned against a national database.  Once your license is cleared in the system, a visitor’s pass will be generated for you to wear during your visit.  Please be patient with office staff and volunteers as they verify your information. 


    Due to construction this summer and safety concerns, families will not be able to visit SIS prior to the start of school.  Please know that students will not be required to carry all of their supplies to school on the first day.  They may bring supplies in over the course of the first week.  Thank you for your cooperation!  


    Meet the Teacher Nights – Save the dates! – These evenings are for PARENTS ONLY

    3rd Grade:                        Thursday, September 12th at 7PM

    4th Grade:                        Tuesday, September 17th at 7PM

    5th Grade:                        Wednesday, September 25th at 7PM

    Special Area and special class special education teachers will be available at 6:30pm on these evenings (more info to follow)


    Lunch will be available for purchase for all students beginning September 4th.  Please be sure to send in a check to replenish your child’s lunch account.  If you wish to pay by credit card, visit the My School Bucks website.  Please remember that if children owe for more than 3 lunches, then no desserts and only cheese sandwiches are available for lunch. 


    Somers PTA Note- Important

    Hello and welcome back future and returning PTA members! The SIS PTA is looking forward to another great school year and we cannot do it without your membership. Below is the link to MySchoolBucks where you can pay your yearly dues. 
    Stay tuned! In the coming weeks, we will be using a NEW resource called Membership Toolkit for our online directory. There you will receive step by step instructions on how to do this so you can see who is in your child's class and receive our PTA weekly newsletter.
